For You and Your Family

Equine Law

Equine law is a specialist area covering all legal issues relating to horses, ponies, and the equestrian industry. If you have been miss-sold a horse, need advice on agreements, think your horse has suffered as a result of vet negligence, or require any other equine legal advice, our firm can help you.

Legal Issues that may occur:

Sale and Purchase of Horses
  • Disputes often arise over misrepresentation, “vice” (behavioural or health problems), and fitness for purpose.
  • Pre-purchase vetting and clear written contracts are strongly advised.

Livery, Loan, and Lease Agreements

  • Livery agreements (for boarding horses) should set out terms for care, payment, notice, and liability.
  • Loan and lease agreements should clarify ownership, responsibilities, and return conditions.

Liability for Accidents and Injuries

  • The Animals Act 1971 imposes strict liability on horse owners for damage caused by their animals in certain circumstances
  • Negligence claims may arise from riding accidents, veterinary negligence disputes, road traffic incidents, or injuries at equestrian events.

Animal Welfare

  • The Animal Welfare Act 2006 sets minimum standards for horse care and prohibits cruelty and neglect.
  • DEFRA and local authorities enforce welfare standards.
